Guy Bluford - America's First Black Astronaut
Guion S. Bluford Jr. is a retired NASA astronaut and aerospace engineer, best known as the first African American to travel into space. Born on November 22, 1942, in Philadelphia, Bluford earned a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering and served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force before joining NASA in 1979. He flew on four Space Shuttle missions, beginning with STS-8 aboard the Challenger in 1983, where he made history as the first Black astronaut in space. Bluford's career is marked by his contributions to space exploration and his role in breaking racial barriers in the field of aeronautics.
